Carse of Gowie Junior Championship

The Carse of Gowrie Junior Championship was deservedly won by Hermes Manos with an excellent 13.5/15.

CoG player recent tournament success

Declan Shafi won both the SJC Under 8's Age Championship with 7/7 and the Scotland South (Under 8) Megafinal with 6/6. Declan has now won seven junior tounaments around Scotland this season.

 

Junior 5 minutes blitz

The end-of-season junior 5 minutes blitz was again won by Adam Legge on maximum points of 7/7. Second was Declan with 6/7 and third was the rapidly improving Thomas van Aalten with 5/7.


Alan has everthing under control.

 

17.3.08 Declan won the Fair City P5 and under event with 7.5/8. He's now had four out of five tournament wins since the begining of the year.

9.3.08 Declan won the Glenrothes Congress Primary School event with 6/6.

19.2.08 Carse of Gowrie players have been in action over the last week or so:

  • Amy played in the British Women's Rapidplay Championships and finished in joint first place with 5 points from 6 games.
  • Declan won the Ayrshire CFK P5's and Under on tie-break.
  • Alan has been representing Scotland at the European Senior Team Championship. He's had some excellent results against higher graded opponents. See the Chess Scotland thread here.

3.1.08 A Christmas fun tournament was held for juniors on the 13th of December 2007.  The winners was Adam Legge on 7/7.  Photo report.

29.11.07 The first Carse of Gowrie Allegro Chess Congress, sponsored by Inchture Hotel, attracted almost 80 players from throughout Scotland yesterday, more than half being juniors. The prizewinners were:-

Kings & Queens:
Colin McNab (Dundee) 4.5 pts., Ed Spencer & David Findlay (both Dundee), David Fowler (Bon Accord) and Ian Marks (Cumbernauld) all 4 pts.

Rooks:
William Harkins (Benarty), 4.5pts., Peter Devenny (Cathcart), Adam Shannon (Dollar) and Andrew McCulloch (Giffnock) all 4 pts.

Knights (Secondary Schools):
Ben He (Sciennes), Max Allison (Edinburgh) and Sarat Roy (Kinross) all 4 pts., Aaron Lewis (Giffnock) 3.5 pts.

Pawns (Primary Schools):
Stefan Robertson (Edinburgh) 5 pts., Wenbo Chen (Sciennes), Declan Shafi & Qing Qing Zhu (both Carse of Gowrie) all 4pts., Adam Legge (Carse of Gowrie) 3.5pts

02.11.07 Last weekend, Declan Shafi came equal first (with 6/7) in the SJC Chess for Kicks P5 & Under event held at Kirkhill, and was awarded the trophy on tiebreak. More details here.

 

29.09.07 on 20th September, FM Gunnar Jacob (Castlehill) played a 22-board simultaneous display. he won all 22 games.

08.09.07 The first event of the new Season, the Opening Night Blitz, was won by Alan Borwell. Photo Report.

08.08.07 The latest Chess Scotland gradings for all members is now available here.

08.08.07 Amy Officer (on Board 1), Rhian Hughes (South Morningside) and Lynsey Shovlin (Perth), have won the Faber Cup for Scotland, beating teams from Ireland, England and Wales. This is only the third-time that Scotland have won the event in the competition's history. A great achievement. More details.

26.05.07 Declan Shafi has underlined his status as the highest graded under-7 year old in Scotland by winning the SJC under-7's championship at Hamilton; with a magnificent 7 wins out of 7 games.

27.04.07 The club championship games for 2006-07 have been recently graded by Chess Scotland and 9 previously ungraded juniors now have grades.  Declan Shafi's grade of 512 makes him currently the highest graded under-8 and under-7 year old in Scotland. A number of players have played 7 games, 1 short of obtaining a grade. The current list can be viewed here. Note that these grades are liable to change before the new Chess Scotland list is drawn up in August.

03.04.07 End-of-season tournaments were held on 29 March 2007. The Easter junior fun tournament was won by Cameron Conway, and the annual blitz tournament by Alan Borwell.  The club will not be meeting over the summer, and the first night of the new season will be in early September.

02.04.07 The season has finished with the A-team finishing third in TAFCA Division 1 and the B-team finishing third in TAFCA Division 2. To complete the sequence, the Club also finished third in SNCL Division 4, missing out on promotion by two board points.

23.02.07 A fun tournament was held for juniors on 22 February 2007.  The fifteen entrants were split into two sections based approximately on ability.  A very competitive Section A was won by Jamie Lamont with 5.5/7.  Aarran Morgan won all his games to take Section B.  Photo report.

13.02.07 Amy Officer has won the British Women's Chess Association rapidplay championship for 2007.  She also won the under-16 championship.  More details here and here.

06.02.07 Jamie Lamont, Harry Swan and Hermes Manos have had success at the recent Perth Congress and have qualified for the Scottish Schools Individual Chess Championship.

09.01.07 Amy Officer has won the Cherie Booth QC Award for the Scottish Girl Player of the Year.  The award is thoroughly deserved as in the past year she has won the WFM title, and designed and launched the Chess Scotland juniors' web-site, in addition to her other successes for both club and country. 15.12.06 A Christmas fun tournament was held for juniors on 14 December 2006.  Originally intended to be a casual-Swiss tournament, the speed of play turned it into an eleven player all-play-all.  The joint winners were Adam Legge and Jamie Lamont who both scored 9/10.  Photo report.

01.11.06 Paul Shafi's computer chess program "Dinosaur Chess: Learn to play!" has been short listed for a BAFTA Scotland Interactive Media Award. Fingers crossed for a success. You can obtain a trial version at http://www.dinosaurchess.com. The BAFTA Scotland Awards will be recorded and then broadcast on the 13th November.

30.09.06 TAFCA fixtures for the 2006-07 season have now been finalised. All the clubs games can be seen at the fixtures link.

25.08.06 There will be a very special event at the club at 7.00pm on Thursday 21st September when International Grandmaster, Dr Colin A. McNab, one of Scotland’s top grandmasters has kindly agreed to give a Simultaneous Display, to which current and prospective members are invited to play against him.   We will be accepting entries up to Thursday 14th September.

25.08.06 This report on the Club has been published in the Inchture Village Newsletter. A members' newsletter has been e-mailed to all members.

04.06.06 Amy Officer scored a terrific 6 points out of 9 at the FIDE World Chess Olympiad in Turin to obtain the Woman FIDE Master (WFM) title.  The Scottish women's team finished in 73rd position. You can play through some of the games that took Amy to the WFM title here.

19.04.06 Karen Ramsay has won TAFCA's Most Improved Junior award for 2005/06.  Our congratulations to her.

16.03.06 Jamie Lamont has been invited to take part in the Scottish Schools Individual Chess Championship (under-12 section) to be held in Edinburgh on April 2nd. We wish him every success.

26.02.06 An outstanding honour for one of the Club’s leading young players, is that Amy Officer (age only 14!) has been selected as a member of the four player squad for the Scottish Ladies team to play in the FIDE World Chess Olympiad in Turin, Italy, for two weeks at the end of May/early June. We wish Amy every success, as one of the youngest players ever to play for a full Scotland international chess team!
