Round 7 SNCL Grangemouth SCO

Notes by Alan Borwell

1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 e5 6.Ndb5 d6 7.Bg5 a6 8.Na3 b5 9.Bxf6 gxf6 10.Nd5 f5 11.Bd3 Be6 12.Qh5 Rg8 13.g3 Nd4?! More usual here is 13.....Rg5, Rg4 or h6

14.c3 Rg5?! ( Here 14... fxe4 15.Bxe4 Bg4 16.Qxh7 Rg7 17.Qh6 Nf3+ 18.Ke2 is a possible continuation (Van Wely))

15.Qd1 Nc6 Effectively, Black lose a tempo, although the White Q is back home again

16.Qe2! The idea of this is to press down the e file, facilitate Q side castling and perhaps think of a capture on b5. ( The main alternative is the thematic 16.Nc2)

16... Rb8 I thought this was the right move, but realised that the Black R on g5 could be targetted

17.f4 This looked right here as Black cannot really capture on f4 as White can then play exf4 and the Black bishop is pinned.

17... Rg4? This is another wasted tempo at a rather critical moment. Better to retreat immediately.

18.Nc2 ( Also strong here would be 18.Ne3)

18... Rg8 19.O-O-O This seemed to be the right time to shift the K and bring the QR into the centre. Of course, 19..... Qa5 would allow the fork on f6 and even if the Black Q does get to a2, it is not fatal.

19... Bh6? My young opponent overlooked my reply, probably expecting 20. Kh1 when 20.....Kf8 avoids the N fork etc.

20.Qh5! Bf8 Yet another tempo lost whilst the White central pawns are ready to roll.

21.Nce3! No need to rush things. This also allows the B to retreat to b1, if necessary

21... b4!? His only chance is to try to attack the White King.

22.c4! ( Less risky than 22.exf5 Bxd5 23.Nxd5 bxc3 24.bxc3 Qa5)

22... b3 23.a3 Nd4 What else ?

24.exf5 Bxd5 25.Nxd5 Rc8 ( Probably 25... Bg7 offers more, but 26.f6 Bxf6 27.Bxh7 is very strong.)

26.Rhe1 Anticipating my opponents next move, whereas 26......Bg7 would still be best.

26... Nc2 27.fxe5! ( More dynamic than 27.Bxc2 bxc2 28.Rd2 although it also wins easily.)

27... Bg7 Alternatives such as 27....Qg5+ or Nxe1 also lose easily.

28.e6! Fritz gives 28. Nf6+ or exd6+ as well as my move, which I think is more aesthetic! (28.e6 Black resigned, as discovered or double checks abound after 28... Rf8 ( Alternatively the spectacular 28... Qg5+ 29.Qxg5 Bxb2+ 30.Kxb2 Rxg5 31.e7!! wins nicely.)) 1-0
