Notes by Kevin Paine

.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.O-O b5 6.Bb3 Be7 7.Re1 d6 8.h3 (8.c3 which is more common, was avoided due to unnecessary concern about 8... Bg4 (8... O-O 9.h3 equal chances, quiet position) 9.h3 Bh5 10.g4 White has a slight advantage)

... Na5 9.c3 Nxb3 10.axb3 accepting the doubled pawns in exchange for the half open file for the rook.

... c5 11.d3 O-O 12.Nbd2 Bb7 13.c4?! Nd7 14.Nf1 f5! 15.Qc2 (15.Ng3 may be a better way to defend the pawn.)

... b4 16.Ne3 eyeing up the outpost on d5

... Nf6?! probably to exchange the knight hopping into d5 but giving up the f-pawn

.Nxf5 Bc8 18.Ng3 refusing the "bad" bishop on e7

... Ne8 19.Qe2 Nc7 20.Be3 Ne6 21.Rac1 Rf7 22.Nf1 again White is routing a knight towards the d5 outpost, but it's all very slow requiring the bishop to move again.

... Nf4 Helping White to move the bishop

.Bxf4 Rxf4 24.Ne3 Be6 25.Nd5 Bxd5 26.cxd5 (26.exd5 perhaps better)

... Qf8 27.Ra1 Qf7 28.Ra2 An attempt to generate pressure on the a-pawn that doesn't work.

... Qg6 29.Kh1 a5 30.Rea1 Bd8 31.Rf1 Abandoning the pressure on the a-pawn and starting a sequence of aimless White moves with no plan.

... Bc7 32.Raa1 Raf8 33.Qe3 Qh5 34.Nh2 Bd8 35.f3 Qg6 36.Rg1 h5 37.Qe2 R4f7 38.Qe1 Ra7 39.Qe2 Bg5 40.Rge1 Bh4 41.Rg1 Bg3 42.Nf1 h4 43.Nxg3 hxg3 44.Qe3 Rf4 45.Qe2 Qh5 46.Rgf1 g6 47.Qd2 Rh4 48.Qe2 Rh7 49.Kg1 only move

... Rxh3? An unsound sac that should have lost the game.

.gxh3 Qxh3 51.Qg2 only move that stops mate

... Qh4 52.Rxa5 White is now winning

... Rh5 53.Ra6 White is in time trouble, but nothing excuses this terrible move. (53.Ra8+ Kg7 54.Rfa1 Qf4 55.R1a7+ Kh6 56.Rh8+ Kg5 57.Rxh5+ gxh5 58.Rg7+ should have been good enough)

... Qf4! the winning move

.Re1 Rh2 55.Qf1 Qh4 56.Qg2 Rxg2+ 57.Kxg2 Qh2+ 58.Kf1 Qf2# 0-1
